L'art religieux de la fin du Moyen Age en France : étude sur l'iconographie du Moyen Age et sur ses sources d'inspiration

Mâle, Emile, 1862-1954 · 1922 · Paris : Librairie A. Colin · 250 pictures

Émile Mâle's scholarly study of late medieval French religious iconography and its literary sources, published in Paris by Armand Colin in 1922 for art historians and students of Christian symbolism. The 250 plates are mostly grainy halftone photographs of fifteenth-century panel paintings, tapestries, stained glass, tomb sculpture and manuscript pages, with some line engravings of Gothic tracery and effigies, offering crowded figure groups, canopy architecture, drapery patterns and haloed saints usable as silhouettes or texture.
