Jean-Baptiste Descamps's four-volume biographical dictionary of Flemish, German and Dutch painters, published in Paris by Charles-Antoine Jombert from 1753 with engraved portraits by Etienne Ficquet, aimed at collectors and connoisseurs. Alongside the portrait plates run woodcut typographic ornaments: hatched-ground initial letters in scrolled frames, and symmetrical headpieces of an urn flanked by acanthus foliage, usable as drop caps, dividers and spot ornaments.
