Color standards and color nomenclature
A self-published color reference by ornithologist Robert Ridgway, issued in Washington, D.C., in 1912 to give naturalists, and later painters and printers, fixed names and samples for the colors they described. The plates are grids of hand-mounted painted swatches on grey card, three tint columns per page, each chip captioned with a name such as Empire Yellow or Dusky Slate Blue, offering ready-made palettes, graded tint ramps, and specimen-label typography.
