Le 19e siècle
Albert Robida's illustrated popular history of nineteenth-century French life, drawn and written by him and published in Paris by G. Decaux in 1888 for a general readership. The pen-and-ink vignettes are loose caricature scenes — a cobbler reading a print at his bench, soldiers lounging with rifles in a bedroom, top-hatted men among crinolined women, army canteen-keepers arguing — giving designers period costume, uniforms and furniture rendered in open, sketchy line that reproduces well at small sizes.
