Racinet, A. (Auguste), 1825-1893 · 1888 · Paris, Firmin-Didot et cie · 109 pictures

A. Racinet's six-volume survey of historical dress, published by Firmin-Didot in Paris from 1888, made for artists, costumers and design students with 500 plates covering clothing, furniture, arms and household objects across periods and peoples. Plates combine full-colour chromolithographs heightened with gold and silver against flat tinted grounds and monochrome camaieu outline studies, grouping figures in rows with trilingual French, German and English captions; useful for period silhouettes, textile pattern, and figure cut-outs.
