Lectures on architecture and painting : delivered at Edinburgh in November 1853
John Ruskin's four Edinburgh lectures of 1853 on Gothic architecture, painting and Pre-Raphaelitism, issued in New York by Wiley and Halsted in 1856 for a general lecture-going and reading public. The plates are Ruskin's own pen and engraved studies: paired lancet windows with dogtooth mouldings and foliate capitals, a vesica opening cut in coursed masonry, carved leaf spandrels, and a tree trunk drawn in dense parallel hatching, useful for architectural ornament motifs and hand-drawn shading textures.
