Vincenzo Cartari's handbook of classical gods, first issued in the 1550s and here in the 1624 Venetian edition from Evangelista Deuchino with additions by Pignoria and woodcuts after Ferroverde, made for Italian artists, poets and scholars needing correct attributes for pagan deities. The 260 woodcuts show gods and personifications standing with animals, altars, cornucopias and coin-like medallion portraits, framed by ruled borders and rows of floral printer's ornament that can be lifted as rules, frames and repeating strips.
