Le imprese heroiche et morali
An emblem book by the Florentine antiquarian Gabriele Simeoni, printed in Lyon by Guillaume Rouillé in 1559 for learned readers of Italian devices and mottoes. Each woodcut sets a device — anchor and column, arrow bundle, a man with falcons — inside an oval ringed by grotesque borders of scrolling vine, birds and small figures, with blank Latin motto ribbons ready for new lettering.
