An Italian emblem book of devices, compiled by Girolamo Ruscelli with additions by Francesco Patrizi, printed in Venice by Comin da Trino in 1572 and dedicated to Philip II of Spain, for courtly readers of heraldry and mottoes. Alongside the emblem plates run square woodcut initials in which letters are built from foliage, scrolling vines and small figures, usable as drop caps and ornament.
