Le imprese illustri del S.or Ieronimo Ruscelli.
An emblem book of personal devices compiled by Girolamo Ruscelli and printed by Francesco de Franceschi in Venice in 1584, for nobles and courtiers who used such imprese as identifying badges. Each plate sets a motto scroll and symbolic figure inside a heavy strapwork cartouche flanked by satyrs, herms, sphinxes and swags, alongside grotesque-mask headpieces usable as frames and ornaments.
