A Venetian emblem book of imprese — personal heraldic devices with their mottoes — compiled by Girolamo Ruscelli with a fourth book by Vincenzo Ruscelli, engraved by Giacomo Franco and Gaspare Oselli and printed by Francesco de' Franceschi in 1584 for noble and courtly readers. Each device sits in a copperplate strapwork cartouche framed by herms, sphinxes, caryatids and clawed feet, with motto banderoles and small landscapes; woodcut mask headpieces supply repeatable ornament.
