Giovanni Branca's Le machine, printed in Rome in 1629 with parallel Italian and Latin text, sets out mills, pumps, mints and other devices for engineers, craftsmen and patrons of the period. Each woodcut plate shows a lettered machine—gear trains, water wheels, bucket chains, screw presses—standing in a sketchy landscape or workshop, drawn in hard outline with hatched shading, useful for diagram motifs, cutaway conventions and early industrial silhouettes.
