The lens
The Lens was the quarterly journal of the State Microscopical Society of Illinois, issued in Chicago from 1872 for members and other working microscopists reporting on specimens, slides and technique. The plates mix sepia photomicrographs of striated and scale-like structures with fine pen drawings of cells, nuclei, hexagonal tissue grids and filament tangles, giving usable line-and-dot textures, repeating cellular patterns and high-contrast organic silhouettes.
