Le pays des fourrures
Jules Verne's Arctic novel Le pays des fourrures, issued by J. Hetzel in Paris in 1873 as part of the Voyages extraordinaires for French general and young readers, illustrated by Jules Férat and engraved on wood by Hildibrand and others. The plates are dark-toned wood engravings in which small silhouetted figures stand against ice fields, basalt cliffs and snow-driven skies; useful for high-contrast landscape silhouettes, sledge-and-dog teams, and heavily cross-hatched night and storm skies.
