A 1686 guide to the paintings, sculpture and architecture of Bologna's churches and palaces, written by the Bolognese antiquarian Carlo Cesare Malvasia and printed by Giacomo Monti for visitors touring the city. The illustrations here are small square woodcut initials in which roman capitals sit against sprays of five-petalled roses and pointed leaves, some on stippled grounds, giving designers a set of floral drop caps with visible ink spread and worn block edges.
