Les anglais peints par eux-mêmes : par les sommités littéraires de l'Angleterre
A French edition of Kenny Meadows's "Heads of the People," issued by L. Curmer in Paris in 1840 with text adapted by Emile de la Bédollière, cataloguing English social types for middle-class readers who bought illustrated part-works. Wood engravings give half-length character studies in hatched line — clerks stooped over desks, a talker with raised hands — alongside chapter headpieces of scrolled foliage framing still lifes of ledgers, jugs and bundled papers.
