Victor Fournel's survey of contemporary French painters and sculptors, published by A. Mame at Tours in 1885 for general French readers following the Salons. Full-page wood engravings reproduce Salon paintings: crowded market and harbour scenes, deathbed and sickroom interiors, country outings in crinolines, all in dense cross-hatched grey tones usable as period genre scenes and figure groups.
