Les contes drolatiques
Balzac's Contes drolatiques, a collection of bawdy tales in mock-medieval French, issued in Paris by Jules Tallandier around 1900 with illustrations by Albert Robida for a general reading public. Robida's pen-and-ink drawings show Renaissance courtiers, robed magistrates, bedchambers and cathedral interiors in loose crosshatched line, useful for period costume, historical crowd scenes and vignette headpieces with open white margins.
