Le sententiose imprese ; et, Dialogo
A collection of imprese — personal devices with Latin mottoes — compiled by Gabriele Simeoni and printed in Italian at Lyon by Guillaume Rouillé in 1560, issued with his Dialogo and drawing on Paolo Giovio's earlier treatise for courtiers and heralds. Each woodcut sets a single emblem in an oval medallion wrapped in ribbon scrolls, surrounded by strapwork frames of grotesques, sea-creatures, satyrs and putti; useful for cartouches, banderole lettering, and repeatable border ornament.
