Les Français peints par eux-mêmes : encyclopédie morale du dix-neuvième siècle. --

1841 · Paris : L. Curmer · 204 pictures

A multi-volume survey of French social types, written by many authors and illustrated by Gavarni, Monnier and others, issued in Paris by L. Curmer from 1840 for middle-class readers curious about their own society. Wood-engraved figures stand alone against blank paper in profile or three-quarter view, drawn in loose hatched line: clerks with hats and satchels, market women, stooping old men.
