Henri Bouchot's 1891 survey of the French illustrated book, published in Paris by E. Rouveyre for collectors and bibliophiles tracing vignette illustration from the classical and romantic periods through the July Monarchy, Second Empire and the 1870s. The plates are reproduced wood-engraved and pen-drawn vignettes: single standing and seated figures in caps and boots, courting couples on garden benches, cramped domestic interiors, drawn in loose hatched line with open white ground, useful as small-scale figure spots and headpiece fillers.
