Lessons in fancy work
A needlework instruction manual by Lydia Y. Sandford, published at Quincy, Illinois in 1885 for home embroiderers working counted stitches on canvas. The plates are photographic close-ups of stitched samplers: white crosses, rings, stars and lattice bars massed on dark grids, giving designers ready-made repeat patterns, pixel-like grid textures and bordered square panels.
