Les tortures de la mode
A suite of lithographic caricatures by Cham (Amédée de Noé) published in Paris around 1850 for readers of Les Modes Parisiennes and Le Journal Amusant, mocking the discomforts of contemporary dress. Plates stack two to four captioned vignettes per page: crinolines jamming doorways, plumed hats blinding wearers, corset-lacing struggles, top-hatted men on the Bourse steps, drawn in loose crayon line with grey wash shadow.
