A tangled tale
Ten linked puzzle stories by Lewis Carroll, first serialised in The Monthly Packet and issued in book form by Macmillan, London, in 1885, with illustrations by A. B. Frost, addressed to readers who would work the arithmetic and geometry problems buried in the narrative. The pages sampled here are letterpress text: "Knot" chapter openings with small-capital titles and italic verse epigraphs, footnotes set off by short rules, and italicised emphasis within Victorian book type — useful for chapter-head layouts, epigraph settings and period text textures.
