A French emblem book by the Jesuit Gabriel François Le Jay, with verses by Fontenelle, printed in Paris in 1687 to celebrate Louis XIV's religious policy for a learned court readership. Twenty-six copperplate devices set landscapes, trees, pillars, chains and shells inside cartouches of ribbons, scrollwork and animal masks, each carrying a Latin motto on a banderole.
