Giovanni Pietro Bellori's biographies of modern painters, sculptors and architects, printed in Rome in 1672 by the successor to Mascardi, with engravings by Albert Clouet and others for artists, patrons and connoisseurs. The plates mix engraved portrait heads with ornamental headpieces and tailpieces in which winged allegorical figures sit among symmetrical acanthus scrolls and masks, offering designers ready banner-shaped ornaments and figure-in-scrollwork compositions.
