A writing master's manual by the Roman calligrapher Giovanni Battista Palatino, printed in Rome by Antonio Blado in 1550 for scribes, secretaries and students learning chancery and foreign hands, with a closing section on ciphers. The plates are woodcut alphabet specimens and model lines — swelling cancelleresca capitals, looped flourishes, ruled construction grids, framed borders and grids of cipher symbols — usable as letterform references, ornamental initials and cryptic glyph sets.
