Life and character
A gift portfolio of William T. Smedley's magazine illustrations, reproduced under A. V. S. Anthony's supervision and issued by Harper & Brothers in New York in 1899 for American readers who followed periodical illustration. The plates are grey wash drawings of well-dressed men and women in picture galleries, parlours, streets and carriages, with figures massed against loosely brushed backgrounds; useful for 1890s costume silhouettes, crowd staging, and soft tonal rendering that reduces cleanly to halftone.
