Life and letters of John Constable, R. A
Charles Robert Leslie's biography and collected letters of the English landscape painter John Constable, reissued by Chapman and Hall in London in 1896 for readers of artists' lives and students of British painting. The 47 plates are soft grey halftone reproductions of Constable's oils and the Lucas mezzotints after them: water mills, lock gates, cottages under heavy massed trees, cattle at river edges, and wide cloud-filled skies, useful as tonal landscape backgrounds and cloud studies.
