Linguistic and oriental essays
Linguistic and Oriental Essays gathers papers by Robert Needham Cust, a British Indian civil servant turned philologist, issued by Trübner in London in 1888 for scholars of oriental languages, scripture, and congress proceedings. The single plate is a sepia photographic frontispiece: the white-haired author in profile at a cloth-covered writing desk, bentwood chair behind him, a small seated Buddha bronze beside his papers in a panelled room \u2014 usable as a Victorian study interior, author-at-work portrait, or soft-focus photogravure texture.
