The lives of the most eminent modern painters, who have lived since, or were omitted by Mons. De Piles
A 1754 London biographical dictionary of painters, compiled by James Burgess for T. Payne as a supplement to Roger de Piles' lives, aimed at collectors and connoisseurs of European art. The pictures are letterpress ornaments: woodcut headbands of symmetrical acanthus scrollwork with flower-filled urns, portrait medallions and flanking figures, plus tailpiece vignettes of a draped urn with swags and a bird among foliage, usable as rules, dividers and chapter openers.
