Joachim Menant's 1864 handbook of Assyrian epigraphy, published in Paris by Duprat, sets out for scholars and orientalists the work that led to reading cuneiform inscriptions from Persia and Assyria. The 45 plates are hard outline engravings copied from reliefs and seals: fish-cloaked priests, bearded kings, winged genii above stepped fire altars, and blocks of cuneiform signs usable as ready-made hatched line art, ornament borders, or script texture.
