[Logbook of the Hudson (Ship) of Fairhaven, Mass., mastered by David Marston on voyage from 26 Nov. 1855-25 Apr. 1859]
A manuscript whaling logbook kept aboard the ship Hudson of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, under master David Marston on a voyage of 1855-1859 into Arctic waters, recorded for the owners Jenney & Tripp and now held by the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The pages combine looping brown-ink copperplate headings and entries with stamped and printed marks: a fine-toothed compass rose, a heavy slab-serif wood-type alphabet, and inked ornamental capitals, all usable as ready-made lettering, nautical device, or aged-paper texture.
