[Logbook of the Saratoga (Ship) of New Bedford, Mass.; mastered by Frederick Slocum, kept by Washington Fosdick, on voyage from 3 Nov. 1856-1 June 1860]

Saratoga (Ship), Fosdick, Washington, logkeeper · 1857 · 7 pictures

A manuscript logbook kept by Washington Fosdick aboard the New Bedford whaleship Saratoga under master Frederick Slocum on a Pacific voyage of 1856-1860, written for the vessel's owners and officers as a daily record of course, weather and whales taken. The 187 scans are tight crops of brown iron-gall cursive on faded blue-grey and cream paper, with ruled boxes framing latitude and longitude readings, hatched borders and dated headings, useful as handwriting samples, textured paper grounds and nautical ledger layouts.
