London cries & public edifices
An 1851 London picture book by John Leighton, issued by Grant and Griffith for children, pairing the city's street cries with its public buildings. Pen-and-ink plates on tinted grounds set a single hawker or beggar in the foreground against the Bank, Temple Bar, Paternoster Row or the Tower, with carts, horses, dogs and shop signs filling the middle distance.
