De l'origine des loix, des arts, et des sciences, et de leurs progrès chez les anciens peuples
A three-volume French treatise on the origins of laws, arts and sciences among ancient peoples, written by the Paris magistrate Antoine-Yves Goguet with Alexandre-Conrad Fugère and published by Desaint & Saillant in 1758 for scholarly readers. The plates here are printers' ornaments: small letterpress woodcut headpieces and tailpieces of paired laurel or olive sprays curving into heart shapes around scrolled ribbons, useful as section dividers, rules and title-page furniture.
