De l'origine des loix, des arts, et des sciences, et de leurs progrès chez les anciens peuples
Antoine-Yves Goguet's three-volume study of the origins of laws, arts and sciences among ancient peoples, printed in Paris by Desaint & Saillant in 1758 for scholarly readers of antiquity and law. The plates here are the book's typographic furniture rather than its subject: letterpress headpieces, tailpieces and factotum initials in which scrolling acanthus, flower sprays, shells and cartouches frame small emblems such as tridents, anchors and crossed arrows, usable as rule-width ornament, corner devices and drop-cap frames.
