Lux evangelica sub velum sacrorum emblematum recondita in anni dominicas, selecta historia & morali doctrina varie adumbrata
A Jesuit emblem book of meditations on the Sunday gospels, written by Henricus Engelgrave and printed by Jacob van Meurs at Cologne in 1655 for preachers and devotional readers. Sixty-three oval copperplate emblems sit in heavy scrolled strapwork cartouches, worked in dense parallel hatching and stipple: hermits in rock caves, birds in flight, a lit candle and open book on a draped table, a rooster at dawn, sunrise over bare landscape — usable as vignette frames, spot symbols and ready-made roundels.
