Lvsvs serivs : quo Hermes sive Mercurius rex mundanorum omnium sub homine existentium, post longam disceptationem in concilio octovirali habitam, homine rationali arbitro, judicatus & constitutus est

Maier, Michael, 1568?-1622 · 1616 · Oppenheimii : Ex chalcographia Hieronymi Galleri, sumptibus Lucae Jennis Bibliop. · 7 pictures

A short Latin alchemical disputation by the physician Michael Maier, in which Mercury is judged king of all sublunary things, printed at Oppenheim in 1616 by Hieronymus Galler for the Frankfurt bookseller Lucas Jennis and aimed at learned readers of Paracelsian and Hermetic writing. The pictures are the printer's woodcut furniture rather than plates: long horizontal headpiece friezes of acanthus scrollwork inhabited by putti, dogs, birds and grotesque masks, plus a tailpiece of a bearded face set in strapwork with pendant drops, usable as borders, rules and section breaks.
