Manly Palmer Hall collection of alchemical manuscripts, 1500-1825
A hand-copied English alchemical manuscript from the Manly Palmer Hall collection of alchemical papers (c. 1600-1825, Getty Research Institute), made by practising alchemists as a working record of apparatus and process. Pen-and-ink drawings washed in pink and buff show numbered furnaces, domed and tiered brick structures with arched stoke-holes and side tubes, annotated in cursive marginal notes, alongside looping penwork flourishes usable as ornament, diagram stock, or line texture.
