Manly Palmer Hall collection of alchemical manuscripts, 1500-1825
A gathering of hand-copied European alchemical manuscripts dating from roughly 1500 to 1825, assembled by the Los Angeles occult writer Manly P. Hall and now at the Getty Research Institute, originally made by and for practising alchemists and Hermetic students. The drawings are small pen-and-ink emblems tinted with thin green, grey and brown washes: scrolling smoke plumes, rayed suns with limbs, burning walled towers, flames rising from vessels — usable as spot ornaments, marks and diagram vocabulary.
