Manly Palmer Hall collection of alchemical manuscripts, 1500-1825
Marbled endpapers from a bound volume in the Manly Palmer Hall collection of alchemical manuscripts (1500-1825), assembled by the American occult writer Manly P. Hall and now at the Getty Research Institute, with texts attributed to Jakob Böhme, Sigismond Bacstrom and Cagliostro. The plates are hand-combed paste and pigment in scarlet, brown and black, swirling into feathered curls and stone-like veining that read as seamless repeating texture for covers, endpapers, backgrounds and color fields.
