A manual of the art of dyeing
A practical handbook on dyeing by Glasgow chemist James Napier, published by Griffin in 1853 for dyers, bleachers and textile workers learning chemical method. The wood-engraved plates show benchtop apparatus — a flask of boiling liquid with retort stand, a furnace basket piped to a receiving bowl, a lidded tinned vessel drawn in dense hatching — plus typeset diagrams bracketing chemical formulae with radiating lines, useful for laboratory motifs, hatched cylinder textures and structured type-and-rule layouts.
