A manual of pottery and porcelain for American collectors

Treadwell, John H · 1872 · New York, Putnam · 24 pictures

A collector's handbook on pottery and porcelain published by Putnam in New York in 1872, written by John H. Treadwell to help American buyers identify wares by shape, mark and period. The wood-engraved cuts show single vessels in silhouette against blank grounds: amphorae with inscribed bands, grotesque-spouted ewers, figured jugs and a pedestalled vase with a seated figure on the lid, all rendered in close hatching that supplies ready-made object outlines and ornamental borders.
