A Latin scholarly edition of Ammianus Marcellinus's surviving books of the Res Gestae, edited by Friedrich Lindenbrog with Henri and Adrien de Valois and printed at Leiden by Pieter van der Aa in 1693 for classical scholars and antiquarians. Engraved plates show profile portraits of late Roman emperors on beaded coin medallions framed by ribbons, acanthus and blank scroll cartouches, alongside woodcut foliate initials usable as drop caps, medallion frames and ready-to-fill label panels.
