The masterpieces of the early Flemish painters : sixty reproductions of photographs from the original paintings, by F. Hanfstaengl, affording examples of the different characteristics of the artist's work
A pocket art volume from Gowans & Gray's 1908 London series, reproducing sixty Hanfstaengl photographs of fifteenth-century Flemish panel paintings for students and general readers. The halftones are dark, softly grained monochromes of Nativity scenes, enthroned Madonnas, donor portraits and half-length heads, useful for period costume, Gothic architectural framing, and high-contrast faces lifted from near-black grounds.
