Masters in art : a series of illustrated monographs
A monthly monograph series issued by Bates and Guild in Boston from 1900, each number devoted to one painter and aimed at students, teachers and general readers who wanted a cheap portfolio of reproductions. The plates are grey halftones of paintings — crowded religious and mythological groups, Pre-Raphaelite women in draped robes, unfinished Leonardo underpainting — useful for soft tonal grounds, robed figures and dense multi-figure compositions.
