An English physics textbook by Willem Jacob 's Gravesande, translated by J. T. Desaguliers and printed in London in 1747, presenting Newtonian mechanics and optics to students and lecture audiences through described apparatus and experiments. The engraved plates combine ruled ray diagrams lettered A through Z with shaded interior scenes of darkened rooms, window shutters, lenses on stands and screw-clamped instruments; useful for geometric line work, lettered optical schematics and cutaway views of eighteenth-century laboratory equipment.
