Mathematical recreations and essays
W. W. Rouse Ball's Mathematical Recreations and Essays, issued by Macmillan in London in 1914, collects puzzles, geometrical paradoxes, magic squares and cipher problems for amateur mathematicians and teachers. The 49 figures are line diagrams in black on cream paper: lettered triangles and grids, hatched and shaded areas, dissection puzzles and dotted construction lines usable as geometric ornament or diagrammatic texture.
