Mathematical recreations and essays
W. W. Rouse Ball's compendium of mathematical puzzles, games, magic squares and geometric curiosities, issued by Macmillan in London in 1920 for amateur mathematicians and teachers. The figures are spare line diagrams printed in black on toned paper — ruled pencils of straight lines converging to labelled points, lettered baselines, envelopes forming curves — usable as ready-made geometric pattern and grid stock.
